National Poetry Month 2022- Poem #8- Foundlings and Wonderments- Recipe for Opening Day

I love, love, love baseball! Today was one of my favorite days of the year, Opening Day at Coors Field. I didn't go, it was a day game and I was working, but I am going tomorrow night. And then again next Friday. Tonight's poem, "Recipe for Opening Day," was inspired by Ralph Fletcher's poem, How to Bake a Flower.  If you don't know that poem, you definitely need to give it a read!

Last summer at Coors Field. Taken by me.

 Recipe for Opening Day

Take one sunny, blue-sky, spring day,

Add green, cross-hatched field

Edge in 90-foot chalk lines,

Sprinkle to hold down dust.

Carefully place two dozen pin-striped players,

A crowd of purple clad spectators,

A hundred or so straw-hatted ushers

And a chorus of vendors,

“Peanuts, get your peanuts,”

“Beer, cold beer here.”

Fold in a foil-wrapped hot dog

Thoroughly covered with mustard and pickle relish,

And chopped onion as desired,

Add a bag of peanuts and a coke on the side.

Season with crack of bat on ball

Cheers of crowd,

Seventh inning stretch.

Simmer on low three to four hours,

Finish with a pink cityscape sunset.

Opening Day!

Love it! (And now I'm inspired to write a recipe poem! Thanks for TWO great mentor texts!)
