Dog Days- 6/30
My April poetry focus is "Dog Days." I'm trying to write thirty poems, all centered around dogs. Today is #6, a golden shovel, based on a quote I found on line The ending isn't quite right, I had a lot of trouble with the last two words, because I couldn't figure out how to make the past/present thing work, and himself was just a hard word to work into the poem. I know that it's not done, but I it's Saturday have about a zillion things to do- grocery store, care wash, etc, and I need to head to Colorado Springs to pick up my mom for an evening at the theater in Denver, so this is the best I can do.
"To Love Again"
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself.
Josh Billings
If you want a
loyal friend, a dog
is far superior to a cat and is
quite probably the
world's most faithful companion, the only
difficult thing
is that after a few short years on
planet earth
he will need to make his way across that
rainbow bridge and all the loves
and walks and joys you
shared will leave a hole that is more
gaping and deeper than
you imagined possible and you will tell yourself he
was the last, but soon you will long for furry loves
and will seek another to love you for himself."

Carol, I'm a big cat fan, but I do have to agree that a dog makes a great companion. I find the golden shovel structure intriguing.
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to resist getting another dog! Our "hole" remains too large even after all these years since the last one...
ReplyDeleteI love this, Carol. Each poem I read here is another page in the picture book I imagine you're writing.
