"Zipper"
I crouch down
take your down jacket
in my hands
fumble with the frayed
late winter zipper
until it catches
I draw the zipper
to just below your chin
tie your hood and
stuff your hands
into mismatched mittens
hoping this little bit of love
will be enough
to protect you from
a frigid unloving world.

I didn't write all the time with Mary Lee, but mostly I did. What a month it was, Carol. You say you didn't have much time, but I love your poem. It's a sweet memory, for mother's day?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Carol! That was an awesome achievement, especially following Slice of Life March!
ReplyDeleteI've loved your poems - this one as well.
Loved the last few lines. Love can certainly protect our children!
Carol,
ReplyDeleteWhen I read these lines:
hoping this little bit of love
will be enough
to protect you from
a frigid unloving world.
I immediately had pictures of students come into my mind. It made me think of those students that I felt needed a little extra love. The ones I worried a little more about each day.
I've enjoyed the month of poems. I'm so glad you joined the fun. I enjoy your poetry and look forward to many more poems in the months to come.
I don't know about you, but I feel I can breathe a little tonight without a deadline to post. Maybe I'll pick up my notebook.
