I'm finally finishing getting around to...Carol,
I'm finally finishing getting around to the blogposts from last week. A combination of my daughter moving, company visiting, and too much to think about required a slower pace for reading.

Your post gave me much to think about. I appreciated your honesty and description of the many voices you are pondering at this time. You have quite a bit of new learning and many new opportunities coming your way. The book seems to be one that is helping you to think about the possibilities.

I have to laugh as I move from blog to blog. It never fails that I read a quote that I somehow did not even attend to as I was reading. You had a few that caught my attention as "WOW Quotes" that I had somehow glanced over.

This one: We conveniently forget that children’s ability to use language as a tool for thinking on their own has its origins in thinking together. We also forget that most problems of any significance require the application of more than one mind. The question is, can children learn to use, say, three minds together to accomplish things that the three minds separately could not accomplish. (97)

And this one: Johnston quotes Mary Cowhey, who says, "The real test of a dialogic classroom is to have the least empowered children, the least articulate, take a leading role in that dialog while the more articulate children thoughtfully listen and consider things from their classmates perspectives before they comment or question" (100).

I can't believe I really missed these as much of my reading I have focused my thinking on our learning community and creating an environment that allows equal voices to be heard.

As for the shooting in Colorado, there was something about the timing of our chapters and this event that made Johnston's words even more powerful. I was shocked as well, and can only imagine the impact locally. However, I have also been struck by the stories of people who chose to do the right thing. Isn't it interesting how in the worst stories, we soon hear the stories of the strongest? Those willing to take a risk to stand up for the right thing, to make the right choice, to put themselves last instead of first. I always wonder if I would be strong enough to make those right decisions in times of challenge. I wonder how I can help to shape those kind of thinkers.

Thanks for sharing your reflections. I look forward to somehow putting the millions of thoughts into a post for Wednesday and reading what everyone else is walking away with after all of this conversation.

CathyCathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08233792477358685156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724394291330902141.post-46231928345013050492012-07-27T22:01:28.393-06:002012-07-27T22:01:28.393-06:00Love this entry...Love this entry...Patrick A. The way you are wrestling with these ideas spurs me on. It demonstrates the point that "most problems of any significance require the application of more than one mind". We are discussing significant issues. I am thankful for that and to you for sharing, Carol.writekimwritehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02910094603036735657noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7724394291330902141.post-28101560914005483742012-07-26T19:34:03.032-06:002012-07-26T19:34:03.032-06:00Carol,

I just kept asking myself, "How can we stop this from happening again?" and my thoughts kept returning to these last 3 chapters of this book.

I think that this last post was so difficult to write precisely because the topic was so deep/important/life-changing. There is just so much to think about and then so much to do/change.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for hosting next week.

JillJill Fischhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13162764425985636884noreply@blogger.com
